“I do not want to live in a house where even one Jew does not feel at home—I want to live in a house where every Jew and eventually the whole world, feels at home.”
~Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, zt”l
It is often difficult to establish a strong Jewish community, where everyone feels comfortable, in USY with people coming from all different backgrounds, and with all different beliefs. One of the most beautiful and essential parts of USY is the many Judaic options. Everyone has there opinions and it is not the job of USY to change them, rather it is the job of USY to embrace them and help instill in all USYers this devotion to our amazing religion. At convention this year we offered four different minyanim and that is exactly the direction that we should be heading! USY should make you feel at home regardless of your beliefs.
Frequently people do come to USY for the friends, for the dances, and for the chance to get away from home for a weekend; in spite of, not because of the Judaic aspect. I do, however, believe that Judaism does indeed mean something special to everyone in USY. Maybe you don’t like davening or keeping Shabbat, but I am confident that there is an aspect of Judaism that can really touch you and draw you closer to your religion. This year I will help you experience all these different aspects.
Last year we added the word “Culture” to the Religion/ education Vice president. Though at first I was not sure why we needed this change, now it seems to me to be quite clear. How can one truly appreciate the beauty of Judaism, without truly embracing all of its wonderful elements?
In one of my favorite Ruach songs its says “Ivdu et hashem beseemcha bo lephanav beernana.” Serve the lord with joy, Come before him with singing.
This year let’s have fun with the religion! Let’s make this year great! This year lets experience all the amazing aspects of Judaism, and do so eem cheeyooch al ha’paneem, with a smile on our faces.
